Cheat your way to smooth, soft skin with ClearPrep FX: Review

[ 4 ] March 30, 2009

The quest for smooth, wrinkle-free skin can be a daunting one, fraught with danger (cosmetic procedures gone horribly wrong) and disappointment (money well-wasted).  Whether you work in front of a camera or in another high-profile capacity requiring a lot of “face time”, looking your best can make all the difference.

In recent years, cosmetic laser procedures and chemical peels have promised younger, wrinkle-free skin but these procedures can carry significant risk and a large price tag.  Is there an alternative? Yes.

Cosmetic priming products can also help achieve that soft-focus look.  The results may not be permanent or immediate like that of a laser or chemical peel but it is usually a more cost-effective method with a lower risk level.

Cover FX released a new, interesting product.  ClearPrep FX is both a matte foundation primer and blemish treatment gel.  The ingredient listing is impressive.  Dimethicone (silicone) gives the illusion of smooth, wrinkle-free, skin.  ClearPrep FX also has fruit acids and 1% salicylic acid (BHA derived from willow bark extract) to help exfoliate, increase skin cell turnover and remove sebum buildup.  If that isn’t not enough, the product also contains peptides to help heal blemishes and regulate skin’s oil production.

This could very well be a miracle product.  Normally, I would advise sensitive skin types to avoid products containing a host of ingredients but it seems a lot of research has gone into this product.  It’s also designed specifically for sensitive skin.  If you are concerned about a potential reaction just do a patch test (ie. on the neck or behind the  ear).

The product is available online at Sephora and in select store locations.

Spring Has Not Yet Sprung and I’m thinking…

[ 0 ] March 29, 2009

I need a new winter coat!  I blame my current obsession on Linda Lindstrom. The Toronto-based designer made quite the comeback at LG Fashion Week previewing a fantastic Fall/Winter 2009 collection which will definitely have women flocking to her store later this year.

Lundstrom re-emerged with a stronger focus and brand which still includes her legendary fur-trimmed Laparka, created more than 20 years ago and a big reason for her international success.

Like many Canadian companies, Lundstrom was hit hard by the volatility and sharp rise of the Canadian dollar – a key reason why her company filed for bankruptcy.  At the time, though, she said “It’s premature to say it’s over.”  Lundstrom was right.

She has a partner – Eleventh Floor Apparel – handling her business affairs now.  That allows her to get back to what she does best: design elegant, sexy outerwear (yes that is possible) that is both wearable and affordable.  Best of all?  The clothes are still made right here, in Toronto.  Welcome back Linda!

Get Lucky With LUSH: St. Patty’s Day Bath Bomb Giveaway

[ 2 ] March 16, 2009

St. Patrick’s Day has to be the coolest celebration of the year.  Hardly any stress and all are encouraged to drink and be merry.  Anything goes.  My colleague in New York is making green Rice Krispie squares for her fiance’s party where everyone will wear green, drink Guinness and sing Danny Boy.

I’m going to a fashion show (don’t know if I’ll wear green!) but plan to unwind afterward in a hot tub filled with, yup, green water courtesy of a bath bomb shaped like a clover!  You have to hand it to LUSH Cosmetics.  This company always comes up with great, inexpensive treats for the face and body. The Luck of the Irish bath bomb contains fresh avocados, olive oil and lemongrass oil which should have you feeling pert and peppy, especially if you got too cozy with the Guinness!

How are you celebrating St. Patrick’s day?  Let us know in the comment section below.  You can win a limited-edition Luck of the Irish bath bomb – just sign up for our updates!  Enter your email address in the box next to the red button on the top right side of this page.  You’ll automatically enter our draw.  You can purchase it too, by clicking on the green clover.  Best of luck to you – happy St. Patty’s Day!

Nutritious Whole Wheat Scones: Recipe

[ 1 ] March 9, 2009

I needed a pick-me-up on this snowy March morning in Toronto.  The old toast-and-jam routine wouldn’t do on this cloudy day (it always snows around my birthday :-(   These breakfast scones definitely hit the spot: quick and easy to bake and eggless too!  You can add pretty much anything to the mixture including blueberries, raisins and chocolate chips.

Yield: 6 medium scones.

You will need:

Insulated cookie sheet or two regular trays (to prevent scones from over browning)

Whole wheat scones are great with jam, butter and/or clotted cream.

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tbsp whole milk powder
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp cold, unsalted butter
4 tbsp milk
1 tbsp yogurt
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/8 tsp cinnamon
pinch of ground cloves

1 tbsp milk

Place oven rack in the middle then preheat to 400F (200C).

In a bowl, combine flour, whole milk powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugars. Stir well to combine. Cut cold butter into small pieces, add to flour mixture and mix with pastry blender or two knives until the mixture becomes very coarse crumbs. Add milk, yogurt and vanilla. Stir until dough comes together but do not over-mix. It should be sticky but firm enough to hold its shape.

On a lightly floured surface, gently knead the dough a few times into a ball. Pat or roll out the dough into a circle – should be about 1.5 inches thick. Cut in half, then cut each semi-circle into three wedges. Place wedges at least one-inch apart on a parchment lined baking sheet. With a pastry brush, brush the tops and sides with milk.

Bake for 15-18 minutes or until lightly browned.  Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Serve warm with butter, jam and/or clotted cream.

Menswear: Spring Trends With Harry Rosen

[ 0 ] March 3, 2009

The boys from ZZ Top are absolutely right when they sing  ‘coz every girl crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man‘.  Spring is just around the corner and while a lot of men anticipate seeing women in sexier outfits, women have a lot to look forward to as well – thanks to Harry Rosen.

The legendary retailer walked me through his flagship store in Toronto to preview upcoming spring trends for menswear.   The multi-level emporium on Bloor Street is perfect for the man who craves one-stop-shopping.  It caters to many different price points with suits ranging from $1,000 – 25,000.  The hip, cutting edge fashion is on the ground floor while made-to-measure suits can be ordered on the top level.

This season the look is lean and classic. Think, Barack Obama but with more than just white shirts. The President’s famous Canali suit is available at Harry Rosen too. I’m told that suit went flying off the shelves after his jacket label inadvertently flashed for cameras, proving he’s not the only Obama with retail clout.

President Obama's Canali suit is headline news.

President Obama's Canali suit makes the front page.

Countless customers have grown up with Mr. Rosen maintaining their relationship with the premium retailer whilst climbing the corporate ladder.  It’s easy to see how and why he has been in business 55 years and is still going strong.  He is charming and passionate about making men look great whether it’s a suit for work or casual wear for the weekend.

Mr. Rosen has a lot to say and show you so check out the video.  We’ll have more with him in the weeks ahead.  Stay tuned…
